Solve by Branching method using fractions.

Method 1 is using the concept of finding the cost of EQUAL QUANTITY (1u) of the items. and comparing its difference in total cost.

Method 2 is using the concept of 'Quantity x Value' to find the total cost of the cakes and buns. As the quantity and each value are of different values, hence 'u' (units) and 'p' (parts' are used. If your child is well-versed in Algebra, your child can try for this method. :)

Does your child know how to solve the following question?
Question
Nancy has 9/10 ℓ of milk. She used 3/8 ℓ of the milk to make ice-cream and 1/4 of it to make some cakes. How much milk had she left?
Is the answer 11/40 ℓ or 3/10 ℓ ?
Does your child make the COMMON MISTAKE by making the denominators to be the same and SUBTRACT the fractions to find the amount of milk left?
Hmmm… well … before you take a peek at Pic. 3 below for the solution, let’s take a look at Pic. 1!
Do the 2 questions in Pic. 1 pop into yours and your child’s mind before? Did you manage to find out the answer? ;p😉
If no, hope my explanation in Pic. 2 helps to clear yours and your child’s doubts! You can ADD on by saying that fraction WITHOUT unit of measurement is what your child have learnt in the early part of P4, i.e. FRACTION OF A SET (whole)!
e.g. Nancy has 4ℓ of milk. She drank ¼ of it. How much milk had she left?
Solution:
4 units = 4ℓ
1 unit = 4 ℓ / 4
= 1 ℓ
3 units = 1 ℓ x 3
= 3 ℓ (answer)
OR
3/4 x 4 ℓ = 3 ℓ (answer)
With that big mental block cleared, hope your child will have no issue in solving questions involving fractions with or without unit of measurement! :)
